It is simply a dumb left solution to an income mobility problem. How can we close the gap between rich and poor? I guess it has become appealing for politicians to just drag the rich down than building a more competitive and efficient economy and labour which may hurt their supporters.
I will completely concede there is a difference between practise and theory of these ideologies, and that communism as a theory was more anarcho and stateless in nature: but in practise was widely totalitarian - compare direct democracies of small Quakers to the communist state under Stalin.
Perhaps I should stick to saying x-axis: collectivism -----> total laissez-faire capitalism, and y-axis: individualism / anarchy -----> extreme totalitarianism.
You are have made a common misconception about the authoritarian and social nature of the politcal spectrum and the economic based aspects. Collectivism / Communism is opposite to laissez-faire capitalism on one scale. Authoritatianism is opposite to Extreme civil libertarian / anarchy.

However, their are political philosopies which are "anti-clerical", generally when it conflicts with nationalism, and those which are theocracies where head's of state are also spiritual leaders: i.e. Iran, Saudi Arabia, Vatican City.Though fascist regimes resisted / were anti-communist mainly due to conflicts with Russia at the time, both ideologies are strong single-party / authoritarian / totalitarian
