San Francisco...
The birthplace of Cable Car, and the last place on earth where they still run.

The first cable railroad, designed and built by Andrew Smith Hallidie, opened on Clay Street in August, 1873.
Despite the attempts of "modernization" in the 1940s and 1950s, the people of San Francisco managed to preserve 3 cable car routes, which are now world-famous, and a National Historic Landmark. Almost every visitor the the City by the Bay wants to ride the cable cars while here.

Of all the various forms of transportation I love, cable cars take first place...
even before steam and traction.

  • For the line whose cable is lower, the car's gripman must open the grip and release the cable before the crossing.

  • I love riding them at night when it's empty and you got the whole cable car to yourself. I like leaning out on the sides and standing on the back. Great footage. I like that there's no music and just the pure sound of the scenes.

  • very nice

  • that last cable car slamed on the brakes!

  • Question: With moving cables down below, how do two cable car lines cross one another?
