The Phelophepa Health Care Train, founded by the Transnet Foundation in 1994 is an 18-coach train which brings medical specialists to rural communities around South Africa. For nine months it journeys about 5,937kms to 37 rural towns in four provinces, providing basic and affordable primary health care to 430,650 people annually. After travelling 100,929kms in its 17 years of operation (with 20 permanent staff), Phelophepa has treated 7.2 million patients, temporarily employed 35,300 local people during its week-long stays in towns, and offered 12,750 medical students from universities invaluable experiences in primary health care provision. Communities look forward to the train's outreach services. Phelophepa health teams screen the eyes and teeth of more than 250 children on their visits to schools. This is one such primary school in Kaalbaskraal about 65 kms outside Cape Town, South Africa.
