Best scene in the film, no matter how many times I watch it I still sob like a baby. Breath taking performance by Brenda Blethyn. Some people are not keen on Mike Leigh's "no script and method of improvisation" - I find it a sheer joy to watch his work.

The nominees that year were probably the best of all time in that category. For me, it was between Blethyn and Frances Mcdormand. When I saw this movie I was FLOORED by Blethyn's performance. I'm glad she won the BAFTA (the British Oscar equivalent).

@gorangbang Look she's not the brightest spark is she? What you need to understand from thsi film is that Brenda's character has a very traumatised upbringing. She was utterly clueless. As for not knowing the baby was black... she was told she was premature and some newborne babies don't actually look that black even when both parents are black. Given that she's a bit simple it's understandable there was disconnect with Hortence as a black adult woman and what happened to her at 16.
