ATP World Tour No. 4 Novak Djokovic recorded his 40th tour-level win of the season as he opened his 2009 grass-court campaign with a 7-5, 6-2 first-round victory over Italian Simone Bolelli on Tuesday at the Gerry Weber Open, an ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Halle.
The Serbian bounced back from a surprise third-round defeat to Philipp Kohlschreiber at Roland Garros by breaking serve three times from 10 opportunities, saving both break points he faced and winning 70 per cent of points on serve in the 84-minute encounter.
Assessing his first match on grass of the season, Djokovic said: "For the first match, I have to say that I was playing quite well. First matches are always difficult because you are changing the surface. I was coming from clay where there is a lot of sliding, long rallies and running in the movements. You have to adjust. You need absolutely different movements on grass.
"I was always there on the edge on his service games. I was always having break points and chances to take the break and he was really struggling to hold his serves. So, I think I deserved it."
The 22-year-old Djokovic is the second player this season behind Rafael Nadal (44-5 record) to win 40 matches and improved his win-loss record to 40-12. The Belgrade native has reached the finals in four of his past six tournaments, highlighted by clinching his inaugural home town title with victory over Lukasz Kubot. He finished runner-up at three successive ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Miami (l. to Murray), Monte-Carlo (l. to Nadal) and Rome (l. to Nadal).
The right-hander has enjoyed strong results on grass in previous years reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2007 (ret. vs. Nadal) and finishing runner-up to Nadal at the AEGON Championships last year. He goes on to face Frenchman Florent Serra.
