April 2008 Yorke got a small scratch from a little dog, it didn't even draw blood. He developed an infection from that and within 24hours was in a coma.
The doctors thought he would die.
But they didn't know Yorke very well then.
35 years ago Yorke was run over by a motorbike and his spleen had to be removed.
At that time he had no idea that the removal of his spleen would leave him vulnerable to all kinds of infections In his case sepsis and capnocytophagia bacteria carried on the mouths of healthy dogs and cats.
As his body did its best to fight the infection without the benefit of the blood filter, his spleen. All the blood flow stopped to his limbs. In consequence he had his legs removed under his knees and his fingers also had to be removed. This saved his life.
Yorke urges anybody who has had their spleen removed to speak to their doctor who will advise vaccinations against pneumococcal and meningococcal.
Yorke was admitted to hospital on April 15th 2008 he'll be going back home in a few weeks, sometime in September 2008.
You have just seen Yorke walk unassisted for the 1st time on his new legs.
I think even from this small clip you can see the determined and good natured way he has risen to the new challenge in his life, and I hope to bring you more inspiring episodes of my awesome friend making new strides in his life.
I know he feels blessed to have the love and support of his lovely wife Sally and his family around him.
But let me tell you all who know Yorke are proud to know him and always amused in his company.

  • thumbs up if u got here from nick sanotaso

  • Wish i could get some new legs, mine are hairy:/

  • :) you gotta like this guy. He brings a smile to my face. God bless you and your family.

  • i may not be an amputee but i do know how its like to use prosthetic legs like his. just walk on your toes. i think thats the best way to get a feel of it.

  • @AxleGear89 No, they don't hurt (or at least they shouldn't) if the sockets fit properly. I run marathons and mountain climb, hike, etc... after a day of hard activity, the ends of my stumps will hurt and be bruised. I just dunk them in ice water. Eventually he'll have better sockets, the clear ones are just temporary; mine are carbon fiber and have silicone pads placed on the inside in key spots for added comfort.

  • sorry for the stupid question, but does the bottom of the legs hurt inside the prosthesis?

btw, it's great to see you can walk anyway!

  • Amazing!! Yorke, your a trooper man... glad to see you happy and enjoying your new legs. You inspire many people including myself to stay strong no matter what may hit us.

    God bless.

  • I'm glad you saw the "happy".
