Crowds gathered at the statue of the legendary manager, which stands opposite one of the stands, before the pre-season friendly against Spanish team Real Valladolid, when a a minute's silence was observed.

They then chanted the name of Sir Bobby, who went on to take England to the World Cup semi-finals, following his death from cancer, aged 76.

The England side's second most successful manager had been in failing health since being diagnosed with cancer for a fifth time two years ago.

Since then he used his rare blend of fame and immense popularity to raise more than £1.6million for research into early cancer diagnosis. After a cancer trials centre opened five months ago in Newcastle, Sir Bobby hoped that would be his legacy. But hundreds of thousands of sports fans across Europe will also remember him as warmly for his skills as a leader.

Paul Gascoigne, famously described when a young England player by Sir Bobby as "daft as a brush", said: "I'm speechless. I'm devastated. Bobby was like my second dad. I was like a son to him. I've had loads of texts from football players, managers, everybody. I can't describe how much he meant to me. I've just been crying for three hours, and I've come to see my mum and my dad. It's just unbelievable.

"He gave me a chance to play in the World Cup. I can't really talk that much because I just want to cry, that's all. I love him. And his wife Elsie - I'll always be there for her. I'm sort of numb. I'm emotionally drained. I want to go up and see his wife Elsie but it's a difficult situation for everyone. I'm going to miss him so badly."

Alan Shearer, Sir Bobby's captain at Newcastle, said: "He was held in high regard across the world not only for what he did in football, but for what he did in life. He was a winner, a battler and a fighter and he fought until the very last."

Sir Bobby held on to life to appear at an England v Germany match at St James Park on Sunday in front of 33,000 people in aid of his cancer charity. There was high emotion when he was introduced to the players - some of whom would have guessed they would be seeing him for the last time. Shearer added: "He saved my Newcastle career - there's no doubt about that - and I'm just pleased I had the chance to tell him and thank him for it."

Sir Bobby managed England to the World Cup semi-finals at Italia 90, where his side was agonisingly beaten on penalties by West Germany. As a player, he played in midfield for Fulham and West Brom and won 20 England caps. His successful management management career saw spells at Fulham, Ipswich, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle United. Sir Bobby leaves wife Elsie and three sons, Andrew, Paul and Mark. A private funeral will be held, with a public memorial service later.
