The Werther starts about 5:43 is the best I have ever heard live and with a very young Neil in 1979, barely 30 years old. Of course just IMO . We all Hear things differently. Bravo!

@jojojo943 Yes-- you are correct and he had tons of Squillo in house in his prime that never comes out on the recordings, live or studio besides his acting. The "Parmi" aria he recorded in the complete 1984 studio Rigoletto with Gruberova shows off his ringing sound through the entire middle and top of his voice.

Just heard his Met. Romeo on Sirius from 1986 with Malfitano and It's the only live one I have heard that can Rival the Bjorling great 1947 Met. show with Bidu Sayo. He sings Romeo with great emotion, especially in the last act. He was not only amazing, passionate and in ringing voice but sang two beautiful HIGH C's with no effort. This Tenor never was fully appreciated for his voice and acting ability, partly because he is an American tenor. The same thing held true for some others also.

Yes! As wonderful as this is, he's one of those greats that sounded so viscerally thrilling in the house, more than can be shown in a recording.

I love him. I am a tenor and have sung many of the same roles as Shicoff at an international level, but he remains the benchmark as an exceptional artist. Pace the rest of them. Thank you for posting this and shame on the ROH for denying us his phenomenal talent.

@atevetexon yes his early Werther from the 70's is on you tube, amazing!

Both his Lucia (Edgardo) and Traviata complete Studio recordings on CD are excellent. The Lucia made some years before this live (1997 Tomb scene) was very fine with Gruberova and The Traviata recording also with Gruberova has the added act 2 Cabaletta with a fine High C. Thanks for posting these excellent selections.
Any prformance by Neil Shicoff is simply overwhelming.

Absolutely stunning!! One of the greatest tenors of the last 50 years. After replacing the deceased great Richard Tucker in a concert version of Ernani, he began a meteoric rise to stardom at the Met, and well deserved!! All his performances are exceptional.. but my personal favorite is his Werther!! Divine!!
