I'm unsure when this song was recorded but it sounds like Johnny Parrack is singing tenor. Jim Hamil is clearly singing lead and Ray Dean Reese is singing bass. I think I hear Eldridge "Foxy" Fox on baritone. If so, that might indicate that Charles Abee is on piano. Johnny Parrack is the father of Jay Parrack (of Gold City fame). Like his son, he had one of the purest tenor voices ever and is a living legend is southern gospel music.

Anyway, the song is Track# 11 on Disc #2 on the Goldies (Catalog# 25417) 3-CD compilation entitled Country Gospel: Wings Of A Dove released in 2000. I have also learned it is another compilation Country Gospel:: Vol. 2: Onward Christian Soldiers (Track 13).

The Kingsmen are working on a new album which will be released this fall. Ironically, it will have a song by the same name as this one but it is a new song not a re-make of this great song. Hopefully someone will re-record this version, and if it is done right, it should enjoy the same success as this original Kingsmen version.

Anyway, somebody correct me if I got the personnel lineup all wrong and/or if you have any more history on this song.

  • Thanks for the comment. FYI, I read a comment from Bryan Hutson, the Kingsmen's baritone, on Singing News that ".. the new song that we just recorded "He Is The Only One" (on our new recording) is a new song, co-written by Scoot Shelnut. Not an old Kingsmen song." I'm sure it will be good but it's a pity they are not re-recording this version and that both versions have the same song title being as both versions are by the same group.

  • Johnny Parrack is my all-time favorite tenor, equalled only by his son, Jay.

  • Yes, that is Jim Hamill, Eldridge Fox, Ray Reese, and Johnny Parrack on this song.

  • That does sound like Johnny Parrack
