I Will Buy You A New Life

*Note: This is my final English creative project. I spent 12 hours straight making this. Literally from 5 pm to nearly 5 am on creating, casting, loading, shooting, and editing (it didn't help that because my graphics aren't the best every second recoding was a slow-mo 10 seconds.) My artist statement is as follows --

A culmination of my learning this year in English 11, my American Creative Project is a music video created using The Sims 2 to the song I Will Buy You a New Life by Everclear.

Although the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory, here's a synopsis:
A man arrives at his girlfriends trailer home where she and their baby live with child support. She is frustrated at his lack of having a stable job. He tries to explain to her that the rich dont understand what it is to be poor, love can still thrive. He implies that the only direction they have to go it up, never look back. She has been having nightmares she doesnt remember, waking up crying. I imagine the dreams are of her in a perfect life and when she wakes up she realizes it isnt true. She is comforted by the one part of the American Dream that she does have her child. The man tells of how he is currently living with a roommate, but not really living. He doesnt feel alive when all his dreams are unfulfilled and he doesnt have her. He tells her of his dreams of buying her a garden, a new car, and a big house in a high class neighborhood. He promises her the typical perfect American Dream life. He shares that hes aware that she has been seeing other men, but makes her realize that that love is fake and temporary; only he can make her forget her worries and laugh. He states again hes the only one that can make her happy in the little ways and then promises the perfect American Dream life for her. These things (car, house, dog, and ect. seen in the video) are supposed to make them both happy because theyre the typical things that Americans theyre expected to want. All of hese things can be bought, and she must have is patience while he earns money to buy them for her so they can be happy. He begs her to let him stay the night. At first reluctant, she eventually agrees because they connect over the fantasy life he describes. Their lives are not what they want right now, but just imagining the dream is enough to power them though life, using hope as fuel.

The video is intended to strike an emotional chord with the audience, reminding them of their own visions of the American Dream and purists of happiness. The characters are the epitome of the American mind, a tale of rags-to-riches, if only in the characters dreams. I decided to illustrate this song in particular because the lyrics and emotion in the vocals are compelling while the music its self sticks in your mind. This is the first machinima video Ive made with The Sims 2 (although Ive been playing the game for years) and really enjoyed using my knowledge of its capabilities for an artistic purpose. I felt it was an effective medium of showing the story and themes I wanted to portray. 12 hours straight work was definitely worth it to me for a quality product. I hope that when I rewatch the video in the future I will be reminded of all that Ive learned this year.
