UPDATE 7/20/09!
It was a bad air con idler pulley. I replaced it and the sound is gone. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts3W0S31CJE to hear the bad pulley.

My car has this weird sound at start up. The sound stops after about 10 mins. or less. It sounds like it is originating around the ac compressor. My ac works and the noise does not happen when it is on. Car is a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

It was an easy job!

  • Check all of your belts and hoses; also use the forums.

  • I posted on the forums already. Belts are okay. I'm going to remove the compressor V belt to see if it's the compressor causing the noise. If not, then I'm going to look under the timing belt cover to see if there's a failed idler pulley.

  • Thanks to your video, I diagnosed the exact same problem with my 2001 Forester today. I caught it before it got worse or caused bigger problems. Thank you!

  • What was wrong with it? Did you fix it?
