Barbara was a mother, grandmother, teacher, leader, activist, volunteer and friend. In her 78 vibrant years, she touched so many with her passion, creativity, big ideas and her warm heart.
She was born as Barbara Upshall in 1932 to Robert and Edna Upshall (nee Collins), and grew up in St. Catharines Ontario. She became a teacher and taught for the Scarborough Board of Education until her retirement. She graduated at the age of 58 from York University.
She was a loving mother of Shonagh and Paul McVean, and a doting grandmother of Sian and Kai Huang.
We remember Barbara for her passionate advocacy, selfless volunteerism and leadership: as an inspiring teacher, conductor of the Shepherd Village choirs, profiler of her fellow residents, President of the Resident's Council, founder of the senior's cyber school, activist for countless causes and an adventurer in life. Barbara was recognized for her exceptional contribution, receiving the 2004 "Outstanding Volunteerism for Seniors" award from Ontario Lieutenant Governor James Bartleman, and the 2005 ORCA "Resident of the Year" award.
She left us peacefully and with dignity on October 29, 2010 after a brief hospitalization at the Scarborough Hospital.
She will be missed greatly by all her friends and family.
