@ruthcat I am slowly transistioning from guppies/platys to something bigger. The platys will be gone this weekend and the guppies will probably live another 2 or 3 months (based on their old age). I just bought two dwarf gouramis. There are also 2 cory catfish in there now. I was going to purchase 3 maybe 4 rainbows but of the smaller sizes. I imagine around next Christmas I might be buying a 55 gallon tank or somewhere in the distant future but not right away.

What size tank is this and how many are in there? I am just starting to like rainbows and wanted to add 3 or 4 of them to my 46 gallon bowfront. Do you think that would work? The smaller ones of course, not the ones that get 6" or larger. Maybe a lacustris and boesemani. Any advice?

@Octobersky1770 This is a 40 gallon tank with 20 fish and two catfish.Regarding tank size you need a rectangular tank that is at least 3.5 to 4 feet in length. They need swimming space since they are very active.
What fish do you have in the tank right now?

@Octobersky1770 a 55 gallon would be ideal for 4 or 5 rainbows.

They grow into their color when they mature. They must be a year or a year and a half old.
