This was a celebration honoring the Pope's papal visit to the city of Detroit. Part of the welcoming, and celebraton was Rev. Charles Nicks, Jr., and the St. James Adult Choir singing for the Pope. It also, included Minister Thomas Whitfield at the piano, Ms. Aretha Franklin also, sang during the program. Here is a little bit of the performances.

  • disliked Orthea Barnes gut wrenching ,hard, belting voice sounds so sad. I'm sorry but somebody had to say. God Bless you anyway Orthea though

  • One of the diversities of music, is the different interpretations. I actually enjoyed that gutsy sound. I think the Pope would want to hear more that the celestial sounds of the Catholic Church. Bravo for the Detroit group presenting that ethnic sound.

  • @THERIGHTREVEREND Mahalia Jackson said Aretha's mother (Barbara) was the very Best Gospel singer that she had ever heard. Now that says a Lot coming from Mahalia!! At least we know who Aretha inherited it from (although Aretha's sisters Erma & Carolyn had nice voices as well :-) But absolutely NO-Body has ever topped Mahalia Jackson in Gospel music. They can give Albertina the label of Queen all they want to, but Mahalia was & continues to be it!! That voice will Never be duplicated!

  • The Professor Earl J Wright Jr was on the Hammond Organ for this Historic Event. Earl Wright & Thomas Whitfield also recorded the Album 'One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism' with Ms Franklin. What great music they made together.

  • LOL. I see my gramma Narvi back there behind Aretha on her post to carry out the shouters! LOL!

  • i wish arethas voice froze in this era. this was my favorite sound of hers.

  • @THGMusic08 LOL... and you are so right about that.... One thing among others, Detroiters do well is put out an ethnic sound...LOL.. but Orthea's voice at times sounds so painful it hurts to listen to her. I'ts kind of a deep aching moan. Her voice has truly changed since she's aged but like you said to each it's own and thanks for the hometown shout out!!

  • There really is no gospel singer like Aretha Franklin. She is one of a kind.
