http://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/food-sources-of-iron.php

Iron is an essential mineral used to transport oxygen to all parts of our body. A slight deficiency of iron causes anemia (fatigue/weakness), and a chronic deficiency can lead to organ failure. Conversely, too much iron leads to production of harmful free radicals, and interferes with metabolism causing damage to organs like the heart and liver. The body is able to regulate uptake of iron, so overdose is rare and usually only occurs when people take supplements. Iron from natural food sources, like the ones in this video, are considered safe and healthy, though non-heme (plant) iron is perhaps better regulated than heme (meat) iron. The current recommended daily allowance for iron is 18 milligrams (mg).

  • why do tomatoes and aprocots have to be dried to have a higher content of iron?

  • @chambagi When they are dried they contain much less water and therefore have more iron gram per gram than fresh apricots. In short, they have a greater density of iron...

  • Totally off topic, but who is playing the guitar in the video. Love it.

  • @HealthAliciousNess Thanks! didn't look far enough :)

  • Chocolate? Really?!!! Woot woot!!!!

  • for most americans, there's more of a problem getting too much iron than not enough

  • @Ilrooll Ah, I see, the correct figure should be 23mg of iron in one cup of dark baking chocolate. So the RDA was correct while the mg value was wrong. Thanks for the catch and for commenting! I have corrected the numbers. Hopefully the updated video will be posted soon to prevent confusion.

  • @HealthAliciousNess I mean mathematically 1.8mg is 10% of the RDA not 128%, otherwise its a bit misleading someone might think they are fine if they just have a lot of dark chocolate!

  • @Ilrooll That figure is for dark baking chocolate at 99-100% cacao and is correct. Feel free to verify the nutrition facts by search, or visiting the article referenced in the information section of this video.
