The National Institutes of Safety and Health (NIOSH) estimates there are about 600,000 needle stick injuries reported each year. One third of all needle sticks occur during disposal and because of this, proper disposal techniques are emphasized during user education. Users should never attempt to break off a needle or bend it to prevent a stick. Contaminated sharps should go directly into an approved container as soon as they are used.

The need to protect EMS workers from infection is real. One solution is creating Work Practices that protect the medic from exposure. The one handed technique for capping a syringe will protect the medic from needle sticks when a sharps container is not readily available.
