***Check out more DOG TRAINING TUTORIALS on my channel. I add a new video every week***

The clips in this video have been selected to highlight the progression in steps for training your dog to fetch drinks from the fridge. I use a 'clicker' to mark the desired behavior, and then reward with food or a toy. It may take up to several weeks to teach the entire behavior chain to a dog. When attempting to do this, it is critical that we remain patient and consistent, in order to set our dogs up for success and help them enjoy learning.

For more tips on how to teach the separate parts of this full trick, check out some of my other videos.

  • what if the fridge stays open for a long time without you knowing.

  • @pinki2101 Then we could teach the dog to close the door! I have a video on that too :)

  • I think I'd like to start teaching Jackson this.... now he's obviously smaller, at 16lbs, but he'd be able to reach the bottom shelf of the fridge. I don't think he'd be able to pull open the fridge totally by himself though (just because it 'sticks' together pretty tightly when all the way closed- I dont know if he's strong enough?) but we are gonna start doing this soon! Luckily, he knows how to close doors already!

  • @brittanyjadexo Great! You're right that might be a challenge. Solea couldn't do it at first either, it took us a few sessions, but you never know! Maybe you could get him a smaller fridge? Let me know how it goes!

  • you make it sound so easy - my dog won't pick anything up, no matter how hard I try

  • @cooljane2 You're right, it's not very well explained here. See my video on "fetch" for a better explanation of how to teach that part! Thanks!

  • @Panda09ization I know this is off topic but where did you get that puppy?!?! They arent supposed to away away from their mothers untill 8 weeks! They cant have normal dog food untill around 6 weeks! If you got him/her from a breeder thats a HORRIBLE breeder! Ive seen 4 weeks or 6 weeks before (still bad) but 1 week old! OMG!

  • I really wanted to get some info from your video but couldn't stand the loud annoying music :(

  • just so you know.. your amazing!

  • @dazjhar what does the clicker do exactly? i have have been around a dog my hole life and i have only herd once about a clicker. it would be good to learn about these.

  • my dog doesn't leave the stuff in his mouth!!

  • 2 people have cats

  • Great video, thank you! We are going to start to work on this, no matter how much my husband protests against our dog knowing how to open the fridge...Yesterday i sat down with my Akita girl and worked on holding and picking up objects after watching your video, she was so much better at piece-by-piece behaviour marking than her usual half-assed fetching...i marked every single time she fetched and treated her for every correct retrieve and she understands it so much better!

  • Tab you rock, my 4 month old ridgeback is fetching beer out of the fridge and I o it all to you!!

  • Since you claim ownership of the beginning music, I would like to inform you that that music is being used in a television commercial, with similar length to yours. I suggest you contact me to testify against the TV company which stole your creation.
