MacArthur is fired due to his criticism of US president, Truman. Although it is known that MacArthur wanted to use atomic weapons on Chinese cities, what the Truman administration didn't want others to know is that they too agreed with the general policy of nuking China. Truman fired MacArthur partly because he wanted a reliable field commander who would "pull the trigger" when the president, and ONLY the president, ordered it. MacArthur returns to the USA, with his termination as commander becoming his "finest hour". Secretary of the Army, Frank Pace Jr. believes that although Truman paid dearly in popularity polls for sacking Mac, Truman's decision was probably one of the greatest achievements of his administration(!) Right wing South Koreans believe that losing MacArthur as commander dashed their hopes of reunifying Korea under their control. James Van Fleet takes over for Ridgeway, as Ridgeway takes Mac's job. One of the heaviest battles of the war takes place as the Chinese/North Koreans challenge the Imjin River-Kapyong defensive line.

He was a loose cannon, overrated idiot, totally arrogant which borders on incompetence.

All in all....a useless general who was given a run for his money by a third world nation who was poorly armed.

  • MacArthur, who proposed bombing Chinese cities, also wanted a plutonium belt created by dropping about thirty A-Bombs along the Yalu River, which he thought would leave enough radiation to prevent further Chinese intervention. Besides Truman keeping nuclear cores away from the military, the U.S. had fewer than thirty warheads in 1951, so it was an impossible proposal. We now face a nuclear N. Korea, which is about to transfer power for a second time, and is even more hostile than in those days.

  • Truman used the atomic bomb as an pretext to cut down on military spending after the war. For Mac this was a natural development in war theori like not repeating trench warfare.

  • Truman told Mac to shut his mouth as Truman was trying to cut a deal with China. Macarthur kept having press conferences and calling out the Chinese and belittling Truman. Truman axed the SOB. Macarther came back the hero but was old news in a few short months...and Truman continued on with good decisions al thru his time in office. His wife hated DC so he bailed!

  • MAcarthur thought he could push Truman around. Truman told him to meet him in Hawaii and Mac returned with meet me on Wake Is. Truman flew to Wake where the bastard did not statute him. T's word!

Truman read Macarther the riot act. MACarthur was told not to press the Chinese. M swore he would not and the rest was history. Then Mac whined he was going to get wiped out. He ran. Another gen turned and fought below the 38th.

  • MACarthur was fired for a disrespectful atitude ending in failure to take orders. He was a loose cannon!

  • Great to get it from a British point of view!
