Carmina Campus made a capsule of co-branded bags with logo fabrics of 10 Corso Como as part of its 100% made in Africa Winter collection, produced in partnership with the communities involved in the Ethical Fashion Program of the ITC, (International Trade Centre). Following its mission, this UN and WTO agency which has been collaborating with Carmina Campus for several seasons, promotes job opportunities for a number of African women micro-entrepreneurs living in extremely marginalized conditions.
In line with its approach based on the utilization of reused materials, Carmina Campus made these bags out of recovered military blankets, while the off-cuts of colored fabrics used to make insertions or folded and stitched little triangles are end-of-lines textiles coming from 10 Corso Como. The small patches used to reinforce the handles are taken instead from color swatches of leather manufacturers. Some styles are decorated by the project's logo on one side, while on the other NOT CHARITY, JUST WORK, is printed as a slogan synthesizing the basic approach of the ITC, committed to the creation of sustainable work and not aided independence. The linings of all styles are made of 10 Corso Como fabrics, each bags is reversible and assembled with a different mix that makes it one-of-a-kind.
Carmina Campus is a creative project based upon the reuse of materials and from its very beginning its scope was to deal with the global economic crisis as a problem to be considered both environmental and social. Still feeling confident about the potentialities of fashion as vehicle of messages that could substantially affect the collective pattern of society and promote a cultural revolution from which it could regenerate itself, Carmina Campus found an ideal partner in ITC, sharing its philosophy based on sustainable development and the creation of work in certified conditions of fair labor. The technical training supplied by Italian artisans collaborators of Carmina Campus, supported the creation of new capacity building and was a valuable know-how contribution to the Ethical Fashion Program.
For this small collection 10 Corso Como joined this partnership, sharing values with all those involved in the production and market cycles, thus providing a consistent example of good performance in the fashion system. Designer, producers, distributors and consumers, all take benefit from the value created by a system including what is often kept out of the economy, that is to say not only the recovered materials utilized but also the work of African micro entrepreneurs not included in the context of international trade.
All this is made in the hope that the connotation "ethical" can become soon superfluous and fashion may go back to be simply fashion.
