HAM radio field day in Ashwaubenon (2009) - K9EAM

ASHWAUBENON — Thousands of amateur radio operators this weekend are demonstrating their abilities to provide emergency communications in the event of a crisis.

The annual nationwide Field Day aims to promote HAM radio and help people understand how to create their own amateur broadcasts.

The Green Bay Mike and Key Club organized a demonstration for the public on the use of amateur radio Saturday afternoon at Ashwaubomay Park.

Some relief organizations and government agencies rely on ham radio to broadcast emergency communications to the public in the event of failing phone systems, Internet or other modern communications. There are around 660,000 amateur radio enthusiasts in the United States, according to the National Association for Amateur Radio.

As covered by the Green Bay Press Gazette, a local newspaper.
