it depends on the piece. sometimes you are forced to stand up. plus whether you sit or stand is up to the player. it has nothing to do with technique

our school starts timpani in 6th grader

im in middle school and im in begining band doin percussion wen can i do tympani im just doin snare,bass,bells ^_^

...you may want to experiment with different types of timpani mallets for this type of piece. Different types of coverings on the sticks can alter the tone of the drum...

Thanks for the suggestion, but my band teacher suggested using hard felt mallets for this particular piece, with the dramatic dynamics and all. Caitlin.
