I just read a blurb on IMDB's Premium Member's RSS feed that it was only James Cameron's involvement in the Ringworld movie that fell through, due in part to scheduling conflicts with another development deal, "Avatar 3."
It says the "Ringworld" movie is in development and slated for production starting late 2013.
Studio Execs say "Ringworld will get made come hell or high water," and rather than deviate from Larry Niven's work, the studio has opted to break the 1st novel into a 3 part trilogy.
