This piece is called Train Conversations, and it is from the score to North by Northwest, one of Alfred Hitchcock's best and the first one of this genius director's films that I ever saw. This movie stars the suave Cary Grant, lovely Eva Marie Saint, underrated and brilliant James Mason and great character actor Martin Landau.
Scored by Bernard Herrman, this part of the North by Northwest theme is used throughout all of the parts in that movie that do not involve action. I will be uploading the main suspense theme as well.
This piece is used most prominentyl in the romantic scenes between Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in the train, which is why is is called "Train Conversations." I added the clip at the beginning :).
Music 5/5 (One of Herrmann's most memorable) Movie 5/5 (One of Hitchcock's masterpieces of suspense).

  • Bernard Herrmann may have been Alfred Hitchcock's musical alter ego. But the influence of Richard Wagner, on this piece, is unmistakable.

  • @bondurango

    Yes indeed!

  • they should have an oscar category: best cameo by the director

  • haha, that would be funny...however, not that many directors do cameos now, and when they do they never compare to the wit or difficulty of Hitchcock's appearances.

If Hitch were still directing then we could put your category into action and finally get him the Oscar he never won!

i love the colors. more emotional, than brightness of modern movies

  • good way of phrasing it! the softness of the old film colors really draws you into the old movies well.

  • @bondurango And so much of the Vertigo soundtrack seems almost directly lifted from the Wesendonck Lieder...which is why I love it :-)

  • @bondurango In particular at 1:40 it has Tristan-y dimensions...

  • You know an actress is good when she can make you not miss Grace Kelly...

  • very good music but sad! great job on this and tremendous movie!

  • Singularly gorgeous.

    .

  • Would Herrmann have written this without Wagner? No, but he may have created a different sound world. Vertigo is his masterpeice for me. Tristan! A joy to perform too.

  • Alfred Hitchcock & Bernhard Herrmann

    einfach genial!

  • Nicely rendered by City of Prague Phil Ork folks. Wife and I were watching the movie last night here at home.

  • merci Alfred
