Lesson #47: Would you mind?
This is BLT Eigo, brought to you by BLTnetwork.com. Im your host and English Coach, David Hylton.
In this episode, Im talking about requests or how to ask for something. If you want a glass of water or need to see a doctor, its important to know how to ask. Here are some easy phrases and responses.
A. I feel sick. Can I see the doctor now?
B. Sure, go ahead.
A. Could you open the door?
B. OK, no problem.
Would you mind or Do you mind are more polite forms. You are asking if the request is a problem. If it isnt a problem then the answer will be no. Here are some examples:
A. Do you mind if I use your telephone?
B. No, not at all.
A. Would you mind carrying these books?
B. No, Im happy to help.
NOTE: Sometimes the listener will make a mistake and say yes, so listen and watch carefully.
Good Job!
