The Federal Government says it's taking steps to make the internet safer. Declan McCullagh, chief political correspondent for CNET, discusses the Obama administration's plan to create an internet identification system for Americans.

The internet is what it is. If its not broken don't try fix it! As time passes corrections will be made along the way. It is not the Governments job to mess with the internet and any program can be broken into. This is nothing more than data collection plain an simple. Is it any surprise that the US is emulating the Chinese stance on internet access? A "single secure online account" means that it will be much simpler to control access to sites like Wikileaks and to trace online political activity. This is the beginning of the end of free access to information in the US. The Chinese system of political tyranny linked to laissez faire capitalism is extremely attractive to those who run the world.
