Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Afghan Chief of General Staff General Karimi at the National Military Hospital in Kabul. On the way there my vehicle was stopped by a procession of civilians and Afghan soldiers. It was a funeral procession for an Afghan soldier. Upon arrival at the hospital we presented awards and coins to 18 Afghan Wounded Warriors who had received catastrophic injuries, mostly due to Improvised Explosive Devices. We were accompanied by our senior non-commissioned officers. I watched as both General Karimi and Afghan Command Sergeant Major Roshan pinned medals on several of their soldiers, while also presenting coins and small care packages. It was a sobering reminder of the cost of war, while also serving as an inspiration for me to see the concern and compassion demonstrated by the two senior Afghan Army leaders.
The family of a soldier killed in Afghanistan has been asked by the Ministry of Defence to repay some of his wages.
