@J4K31 There was hostility towards England due to a South American belief (which I don't agree with) that the 1966 tournament was 'rigged' to ensure a European winner. South Americans also disliked Ramsey for calling the Argentinians 'animals'. The icing on the cake was when England arrived with their own food. This upset the hosts & Ramsey's curt manner made things even worse. That's why the Mexican fans behaved the way they did.

@J4K31, Even with Banks in goal the West Germans would have won. Helmut Schoen was smarter at using his substitutes than Ramsey. Anyway, even if England had beaten West Germany they would have been hammered by Brazil - England were the only team who failed to score against Brazil.

Also, you insinuate that Banks was deliberately poisoned which was not the case.

It is theorised by the team doctor that Banks and some other players who fell ill had ordered hotel food and drink against his orders.

@mizofan it was Osgood's own fault Ramsey failed to pick him more. When Alf decided not to start with Osgood in a game in Mexico 1970, rather than accept the decision gracefully, Osgood broke the team rules and sulked off to drown his sorrows, turning up drunk hours later. With more trustworthy and equally talented players at his disposal like Francis Lee, Geoff Hurst & Allan Clarke, Osgood was overlooked.

@J4K31, I'm no fan of that Chelsea side and I partly agree with you about Ron Harris who has admitted with pride that he won the 1970 FA cup for Chelsea by fouling Eddie Gray. However you are very hard on Peter Bonetti who was a marvellous keeper who truly won the Cup for Chelsea in 1970. In the infamous defeat by West Germany, he could have done better with Beckenbauer's opener, but the Seeler goal was a freak one and no keeper would have had a chance stopping Muller's winner.

apart from bonetti and harris. bonetti fucked up at the 1970 world cup, he pretty much cost us our 2nd world cup on the trot. we would've had banks in goal if it wasn't for those fucking dirty mexicans

harris was a disgusting player, he couldn't tackle so he'd hack away at the opposing players legs over and over from behind because he was too slow (eddie gray in the 1970 fa cup for example)

That was a great time, FA Cup in 70, Cup Winners Cup the next, flair with players like Osgood, Cooke and Hudson and the Cat in goal. Ramsay should have picked Osgood more for England.
