I copied the lyrics - which are different from the album-version - from "springsteenlyrics (I hope you do not mind, Eddy):

What I love most about the era of Bruce is you get to see how such classic songs started with a whole lot of stuff surrounding the core of the song and how Bruce stripped it down to that core when they finally got to the studio.

Amazing stuff.

sounds like Bruce did this in a small club and someone did it as a demo.... then the record producer and whoever got it and cleaned it up to the song we know best.
