Working with farmers is a key element of SABMiller's Africa strategy and has many benefits. By guaranteeing markets for crops and paying a pre-negotiated and jointly agreed price, we offer smallholder farmers security and help create jobs, incomes and prosperity. We also help farmers to improve agricultural productivity and expertise, and we would expect them to not only grow crops for us but also improve their own food security and sell to other customers.

Local sourcing has enabled SABMiller to create aspirational, high quality beers which are affordable and attractive to consumers who might otherwise drink 'non-commercial', unregulated alcohol. For Governments, the creation of this new, affordable product category generates new revenue streams and supports rural and agricultural development.

In this example we showcase the world's first commercially-brewed cassava beer 'Impala'. Cassava is Africa's most widely-grown, but least commercialised crop. It is also bulky, heavy and begins to degenerate immediately after harvesting. To overcome this we have partnered with DADTCO (Dutch Agricultural Development and Trading Company), to create a mobile unit which processes the cassava near the fields, prolonging its shelf life, making it easier to transport and opening up huge potential for smallholder farmers -- and the beer category.
