TARGA I reactor at Reed College, seen with the lights off, during Obscura Day. The end of the video shows a SCRAM (emergency shut down). The blue glow is called Cherenkov radiation and is made by the shock wave of the radiation breaking the speed of light IN WATER. The speed of light in water is slower than the speed of light in a vacuum. The shock wave works just like a sonic boom from a jet breaking the speed of sound but instead of creating sound it creates light.

Because of low light the video was very grainy. I did my best to filter out the graininess and color noise but the results weren't perfect. Video of the reactor with the lights on can been seen by clicking on this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqTF1UgvDJQ

  • The aliens are joking about how many humans does it takes to fuse two Caesium isotopes into iron oxide without letting it decay into Xenon 134.

  • @Septagotius nothing, people have fallen in and later tested for radiation absorption no more than normal. the radiation is contained within a few inches of the source so unless you stuck your face on the source you should be fine I sure the hell would not do it but to each his own LOL there have been reports of people taking SECRET swims in the cooling pool with no ill effects LOL crazy bastards. i make sure i have a healthy respect for things that can turn me to mush from the inside out LOL.

  • I enjoy this version with the audio more.

  • What happens if I fall in it?

  • i like the audio better in this video LOL

  • take a swim..

  • @cefaloid Japanese.

  • 早送り?w

  • @gigiboxa Radio active glow. CHerenkov radiation

  • @gigiboxa It is blue because of the Cerenkov radiation. Cerenkov radiation is caused when particles like electrons (beta radiation) are ejected through a medium (dielectric medium) at a speed that is greater then the phase speed of light in that medium, and exciting the atoms. In other words, the reaction is producing particles through the fission of the chain reaction, and those particles are flying out of the reactor into the water pool faster then the speed of light in water, making light.
