Pit bulls attack 4-year-old girl and 56-year-old man

One of the pit bulls in the attack has already been euthanized. The LASPCA is trying to determine what to do with the second pit bull (pictured).

A 4-year-old girl and her 9-year-old brother were playing outside their home when she was knocked down and bitten on the neck, arms, legs, stomach and face, her mother told the hospital.

The child was in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Tulane Hospital for Children.

"The patient was in a life-threatening situation, and she is extremely lucky to be alive, but she is recovering very well," said the girl's physician, Dr. Matei Petrescu.

After neighbors fought the pit bulls off the children, the animals attacked a 56-year-old man a couple of blocks away. Raymond Hall was also knocked to the ground and bitten on both arms and legs. The attack stopped only after a bystander shot one of the pit bulls, the SPCA reported.

Video: Watch the Story Hall was admitted to surgery Thursday evening under the care of Drs. Michael Weaver and John Pigott, hospital officials said.

"The artery supplying blood to Mr. Hall's arm was severely injured, and the survival of his hand was at risk," Weaver said. "Because we were able to operate immediately, we were able to bypass the damaged area and save his hand."

The SPCA impounded the pit bulls and arranged emergency veterinary care for the pit bull that was shot. The animal control agency also cited the pit bulls' owner for two counts of allowing pit bulls to roam at large, no proof of rabies vaccination and for possession of vicious dogs. The agency is meeting with state prosecutors to determine if other charges should be filed.
