Somali Pirates Captured

Somali pirates have been captured after the world's biggest ship hijacking. A Saudi supertanker was seized by pirates 450 nautical miles southeast off Kenya over the weekend. The oil cargo is worth 100 million U.S. dollars. The pirates are now facing court.
Eight suspected Somali pirates were brought to court today in the Kenyan coastal town of Mombasa under police guard. They face charges of piracy.

The suspected pirates were handed over to Kenyan police yesterday by the British Navy. They were apprehended by crew members on the HMS Cumberland a week earlier after a gunfight that left two pirates dead.

The 25 crew members from various countries are believed to be safe.

Increasingly brazen pirate activity in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean waters off Somalia has driven up insurance costs, forced some ships to go round South Africa instead of through the Suez Canal, and secured millions of dollars in ransoms.
