The Battery kids are definately going to work best with some sort of trigger... the samples from Battery are amazing... awesome sounds... and the ability to manipulate them... again... the Alesis Control Pad is basic... but with Battery and Garageband... you'll have enough control to do what you need...
You can drag and drop various loops and from different programs into Garageband... including some from Battery. Battery has some great loops to choose from.
My recommendation would be to run two computers (if you are able). Have one running Battery... and another recording with Garage band. Create the loop you want by recording into Garageband... and then edit it from there...
I use the Alesis Control Pad as a simple trigger... under $200.
