it was very nice act considering the fact that US was about 7miles into Russian territorial waters. They could have just torpedoed US ship and would be 100% right under international law when US ship ignored the order to change it's course and go back into international waters...

@foamblast22486 Well, I havent been on that ship, I'm simply judge by what has been said about this incident. From what I understand, the 'shortest route possible' applies only for non military ships (cargo, tankers, passenger, etc). Otherwise, any nation must get an approval from other nation if one wants to take a shortcut in territorial waters of other nation.

@bmwodessa1 My understanding is that Russia claimed territorial waters outside of internationally recognized norms. And that ships may travel through territorial waters of another nation provided that they are transiting the shortest course from one side to another. But that's just international law, which superpowers on both sides have disregarded quite frequently.
