In this ep we start welding and get the dashboard back in. I also start fixing the roof.
Please check out our website at www.knuxveeone.webs.com updates and news frequently found here. We also now have a sort of recruitment forum post, I'm looking for people to travel with us Convoy style (Safety in numbers amongst other useful bonuses! =] ). If you feel like this is your sort of thing but have never had a good enough reason to leave, now is the time! =]

  • Awesome. Metal filler won't rust, it's like plastic epoxy, but the metal you attach it to will , so treat all the rust before you fill and as you say, give everything a good coat of primer and top coat to help seal it in .

You'll also probably find that living vans will rust from the inside out - especially if you sleep a lot inside. It's the humidity. So this is a job you may have to do again if it was rusted right through but cross fingers it won't be for some time!

  • @MakeYourOwnMotorhome It's good to know that it won't rust, I'll be sure to plaster on the hammerrite in the places I've ground down metal wise so I could apply the filler. This'll be after I sand it down though, no point painting something just to take half of it off shaping filler =P I'm hoping filling some of the small rust holes on the roof as well, it'll pass it's MOT.

How would you suggest getting rid of the humidity? I imagine some kind of outward vent or a dehumidifier would do the job?

  • I detect a new enthusiasm for the bus now, every job you complete is another step towards victory, keep up the good work !!

  • @cashman156 Yeah man you totally know!! =] Thanks for the kind words. I would never have got up on that roof if I wasn't determined, I was effing terrified. Still got the footage though! Go team Knux! =D Also Knux-Luck has spread once again. A rather friendly gentleman from the US is hopefully posting us some 'Hog-Wire' if I pick up delivery costs. Reckons he's gonna have loads left over from one of his own projects. If you're positive then good things happen to ya!! =D

  • @KnuxVeeone It'll pass its MOT with holes in the roof but not on the chassis of course ;-)

Well you mentioned two ways out of three

    (a) Ventilation eg Windows, extractor fan, roof vent. If you are on a budget try caravan breakers or Ebay as they are pricey new.

    (b) Dehumidifier - either electric, or crystals or even salt works I think.

    (c) Heating and thorough insulation is the other.

In spite of this you'll still get condensation in odd spots. (espec using/sleeping all the time in winter)

  • @KnuxVeeone Its good to seal the roof for your own comfort + stop leaks, but TBH this will not be checked in the MOT test, unless it compromises the structure of the van, which it wont in this case. Your main problems will be on the underside of the van, this is where I spent a couple of months welding mine till I was sick of welding any more!! Look at all 4 jacking points & the inner / outer sills, poke with a screwdriver, if it goes through or caves in Mot man will be grabbing the red one!
