Drums are the foundation of just about any kind of music, and a great drum sound is essential to a great recording, but that sound can be elusive. The Drum Recording Handbook by best selling music and audio author Bobby Owsinski and engineer Dennis Moody uncovers the secret of amazing drum recordings even with the most inexpensive gear. Its all in the technique, and this book is going to show you how.

And youll get some great session advice with interviews from hit maker drummers Bernie Dresel, Johnny Vatos Hernandez, Ricky Lawson, Brian MacLeod and Dave Weckl.

The Drum Recording Handbook also contains an instructional DVD that shows the best mic placement for every drum and cymbal, gives you tips on how to get great drum sounds, and demonstrates how to get the best drum mix youve ever heard. And as a special bonus, the DVD also contains an interview about drum tuning with Mike White, one of LAs top session drummers.

  • Don't need expensive equipment ?

That Shure KSM-141 in the video is freaking 500 euros ...

  • I bought this for 30 bucks. Its REALLY descriptive, long, and boring, but if you're like me, then that's just what you're looking for. It's well worth it.

  • To counter all the 'KSM 141 is expensive' comments-- the excerpt is from the DVD. The book offers alternatives such as more moderately priced microphones. Even still, in the DVD Dennis Moody said that he used a Rode NT4 stereo mic or two Marshall microphones for his room mics with great results before he got the more expensive mic that is featured. Anyways, the DVD alone makes the book worth it in my opinion, regardless of the cost of the microphones.

  • @GishoDinev Look at my drum videos all i use are digital referance mics and 2 shures hooked up to logic o n my mac it sounds amazing

  • @robo2613 That's not that expensive. The Neumann U87, pretty much the industry standard for lead vocals, is over €2000.

  • WTF......... Inexpensive, hell. Not a great advert if you want usa to buy the book as the Shure KSM 141 is £455!! It's not what I would define as inexpensive.

  • @GishoDinev 500 euros for a mic is a normal price.

what do you think... i mean.. quality ~ price

  • steps to making drums sounds great on recordings:

    buy TD-20 and stevenslate drums.

    learn about midi.

    trigger away.

  • I have a few problems with his hi-hat mic placement. It dosent sound right to have the hi-hat mic point at the snare and other side of the kit. It has a lot of bleed and phase issues. I usually use an SM57 pointed directly down about 4" away from the hi-hat. and to reduce bleed further, I spent $0.21 on a styraphome(not spelled right)cup and cut a hole in the bottm of it and put the mic inside of it. I'm not a professional recorder, but i think that sounds better than anything else I've tried.

  • Info is great but after the talk we need to hear some results.

You forget the most important part.

    Our ear.

  • It's a good thing this video has handy tips like "don't place your mics in areas where you might hit them with your sticks." Now that I know, I'll stop doing that :)

-Seriously though, this video does have some good info...

  • Scary @ 00:55 !
