Part 2 of 3 on how to get a simple, flat, transparent texture into Bobs Track Builder, a utility for creating tracks for the PC games rFactor and Richard Burns Rally.

This second part covers work in 3D Studio Max. Strictly speaking, even less of these steps are needed specifically for BTB, but if you were using the MAS plugins from ISI that allow direct object export out of 3D Studio, you'd be interested in some of the steps here. Basically, some steps I've done out of habit but in hindsight you wouldn't need them.

And I'm no expert, so some terminology might be wrong!

  • I followed this tutorial to the T and just end up with black square in BTB for my object :(

  • :( Sorry, no idea on that one - there's a slim chance it might be graphics driver related I guess, but assuming all the other objects look fine in BTB that's unlikely... maybe someone else can offer advice.

  • 2) If you want to include your own objects and textures, there are several options available to you. BTB now supports importing objects in the Collada (.dae) format so you don't *have* to use 3D Studio but anything that can export objects in either .3DS to .DAE format. Given the cost of 3D Studio, a lot of people are looking at things like Truespace instead.

  • ok i have a question, im trying to get into track making.....all i need is BTB and 3d studio? or is there something else i have to get?

  • Assuming you want to go the BTB route (which, let's face it, is the easiest way!) then here are your options.

    1) Just BTB by itself. You can make tracks perfectly fine with BTB alone, but you'll be constrained to textures and 3D models available with BTB or made freely downloadable in XPacks by other people. If you want to put in any objects of your own making, you'll be stuck.
