Connor's Video Swallow Study

Connor was given a bottle of barium to swallow so they could see his swallow coordination internally. A video x-ray was shot during the test, administered by a speech therapist. Unfortunately, this was his first bottle in a week, and he was being asked to swallow 4 times what he was previously used to... test was inconclusive.

If I remember, they were wanting to see the severity of his reflux, to make sure there was no aspiration, & to understand why he was spitting up so much. Sadly, Connor wasn't set up for success - the whole concept of the bottle was new to him at the time, plus he hadn't been given one in several days. They wanted him to swallow 20ml of barium, when he had previously only had 5-7ml of breastmilk in his feedings before. Prior to the study, he'd had an eventful morning, and had missed a nap.

Was he in the NICU for a long time? Thank you for answering my questions ; ) I'm just wondering if his development was otherwise normal? Did he just have GERD or was there something else? He's such a cutie. My girls are 6 and 5, and they've made me replay your other video (with the doorstop) like 3 times. They think it's so cute.

I was wondering if you could tell me what his diagnosis is? Why did they decide to do a swallow study? I'm a grad student in speech pathology, and I'm interested in the amount of swallow studies that the medical profession does that appear to be inconclusive.
