The hostess named CAO Fanger,betrothed by her parents to a man she never saw before, is looking forward to her wedding day and dreaming of a happy life in the future.Unexpectedly her fiance is a little baby,who just lost his parents and has no one to rely on.She has no choice but to adopt him and brought him up not only as a fianceeas but also as a mother and a sister.She suffers a lot and her beauty and youth wither away as time passes by. As her fiance grows up she is already a middle-aged woman.Misfortunes came finally after her fiance wins a high rank in the imperial exams and becames an official.He abandons his fiancee and marries to a younger and more beautiful girl.

In this scene, CAO is doing make-up in the water-chestnut shaped mirror,suddenly finds she has got many white hairs.She is so sad and lost in depressin and hatred.
