Middles, Isabella, Puerto Rico (Tuesday, November 8th, 2011) - The GSS Round 2 and first three heats of Round 3 were completed in excellent 2-3 meter waves today. Light offshore winds and lined up swell provided the the top 32 with world class waves, allowing for one of the best air-shows of 2011 to unfold before the the local Puerto Rican crowd.
Riders with the highest individual scoring rides of the day:
Jared Houston (Cape Town / ZAF) - 9.5 (Invert)
Jake Stone (Woodlands / AUS) - 9.25 and 9.0 (Air-Roll-Spin to Invert) and (Reverse air)
Eder Luciano (Itapema / BRA) - 9.0 (Invert)
Guilherme Tamega (Copacabana / BRA) - 9.0 (Barrel to Roll combination)
Luciano and Houston were rewarded with near perfect scores for launching huge flawless inverts, respectively posting the two highest total heat scores of 17.35 and 17.25 out of a possible 20 points.
For the first time in 2011 a total of six riders have won both of their Round 1 and 2 heats, guaranteeing them a slot into Round 4 and leaving only ten slots available for the remaining 26 riders.
The six competitors who won their Round 1 and 2 heats, currently sitting on a 12 point total are:
Mitch Rawlins (AUS)
Jeff Hubbard (Honolulu / HAW)
Guilherme Tamega (Copacabana / BRA)
Amaury Lavernhe (St Gilles / REU)
Ryan Hardy (Margaret River / AUS)
Jared Houston (Cape Town / ZAF)
Seeded into the early heats of Round 3, only Houston and Hardy have completed the Leaderboard phase and are holding onto a total score of 14 and 13 points respectively. The next highest points holder to finish the Leaderboard stage is Brazilian trialist, Roberto Bruno (BRA) who has earned himself a 13 point total and is the only other rider at this point to guarantee himself a spot in the top 16.
Local rider Heison Carrion (PUR) caused the upset of the day, winning his Round 3 heat and eliminating Diego Cabrera (Tenerife / CNY) and Damien King (Port Macquarie / AUS) from the top 16.
According to predictions, the conditions are looking ideal for the completion of GSS Round 3 and 4, WWT semi-finals and DkWT semi-finals tomorrow. With the 2011 GSS World title still wide open, it is bound to be a showdown of epic proportions.
Check in will be at 6:15 am with a possible 6:30 am start.
