The fascinating history of 'Cavatina' by Stanley Myers is well-described on:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavatina_(song) and also in a fascinating comment on this video by YouTube member Acorntechnique. Also have a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joEdNBRuwIs for John Williams' explanatiom pf the work's origin (starting at around 1' 40") which suggests that it was never fully written out as a piano piece in its early life. This is the 1970s Cecil Bolton piano arrangement, which I think is particularly good.

The piece, by the British composer Stanley Myers (1930-93, first appeared in a 1970 British movie 'The Walking Stick' (which starred David Hemmings and Samantha Eggar), but was taken up by John Williams and extended by Myers for solo guitar. Several years later it found global fame as the theme tune for the 1978 movie 'The Deer Hunter'. This version (published in 1971 by Robbins Music Corp.) is very pianistic - whether or not it stared life as a piano piece.

  • You are genius ! I'm wondering how can you just look at the music sheet and playing right away ? I just start playing piano and you truly inspire me. Thank you and keep up the good work.

  • @romeo15101993 Thank you. I guess I have played for a long time. But we all have to start somewhere, and if you play lots of sheet music you too will be able to sightread well.

  • very very nice and emotional, i love this music and the way you play

    thanks

  • @VerificatorX Thank you for that!

  • if you dont find me rude - but i really love the sound u can get out of your piano, how much was this when you bought it? because im looking to buy 1 and dont have a great deal of money and you piano sounds just how i would want mine to sound like :):)

  • @grantyboy1007 It is a Kawai KG2D. I bought it 25 years ago new for £4,750. They are still being sold second-hand for about the same price or maybe slightly less. However, if you look around you can find older grand pianos for much less, and you might find something really good if you are lucky. I would suggest that if you want a grand you should get one at least 5' 8" long - baby grands look very good but the bass strings are very short and can sound a bit 'boxy'.
