1969: Apollo 9 (NASA)

Apollo 9 was the first manned flight of the Command/Service Module (CSM) along with the Lunar Module (LM). Its three-man crew of Mission Commander Jim McDivitt, Command Module Pilot Dave Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart tested several aspects critical to landing on the moon including the LM engines, backpack life support systems, navigation systems, and docking maneuvers. The mission was the second manned launch of a Saturn V rocket, and was the third manned mission of the Apollo Programme.

After launching on 3 March 1969, the crew spent ten days in low Earth orbit. They performed the first manned flight of a LM, the first docking and extraction of a LM, a two man spacewalk, and the first docking of two manned spacecraft. The mission proved the LM worthy of manned spaceflight. Further tests on the Apollo 10 mission would prepare the LM for its ultimate goal, landing on the Moon.

Is there any way you un4g1v3n1, could start posting comments treating people with other views with respect? The past three comments posted on "Apollo 9" have included "crap", "scum" and "moron".

I am happy to have both views of the Apollo moon landings on this channel but this is a channel widely used by schoolkids. I hate having to ban people and delete comments as that's censorship.

But please, either post reasoned, respectful debate or carry on the namecalling elsewhere.

I remember watching this over and over as a kid on 16mm film on the hemisphere of our school planetarium. There's more of the Beatles (as I remember) in the part cut off at the end...I seem to remember the astronauts bobbing helmets in time to the Beatles "Yellow Submarine" vocals. NOT just the orchestral parts.

It was a fond memory when I went to work on Ascension Is. on the LAST Apollo mission...the earth orbit mission...Apollo-Soyuz.
