My friend and I made a video for a contest at UCSD called "Why Darwin Matters." We wrote a song that shows how much influence Charles Darwin had, and still has, on the world.

So he sailed away and history was rewritten
He saw that the animals on the Galapagos
And the ones on the mainland were very close
Seashell in the Andes? Fossils in the cliffs?
A finch, a turtle, and little clues like this
Showed that the Earth was really older that some insist
So he rewrote history, with just a little twist.
Origin of Species, Descent of Man
Masterpieces of science poured from his hand
Evolution, mutation, and natural selection
Terms like this were his invention!

His influence lasts forever, even up till now

For example, to create transgenic mice,
You need to breed and perfect, very select.
And at home, Darwin is at work,
Better foods, dogs, plants are modern perks.
And even global warming, changes in weather
Show extinction, speciation at work together.
As populations die, invade, or back away
Our world is constantly changing, Darwin would say.
