Mary Ellen and I felt an unexplained urgency to drive to Louisiana to visit and to film the wetlands. This was just under three weeks before a hole was opened in the floor of the Gulf of Mexico, allowing tons of crude oil to pour into the water. As we toured this enchanting and unknown place, we realized that the beautiful landscape before our eyes had all but been forgotten by America, so caught up in shopping centers and political intrigue that the intrusion of the giant oil companies, digesting black liquid from the bottom of the sea to provide the fuel for and the substance of our wasteful way of life, was taking place behind a veil drawn across our eyes, so completely absorbed had we become in the American Dream.
