Thousands gather outside EU offices in Warsaw to protest against the signing of a treaty which may affect internet freedoms. The anti-counterfeiting treaty is similar to SOPA, the controversial intellectual property violation agreement in the U.S. that grabbed headlines recently.

Thousands gather outside EU offices in Warsaw on Tuesday to protest against "ACTA" a copyright treaty which may affect internet freedoms. ACTA is an international agreement which has been compared to the United State's SOPA agreement dealing in intellectual property violations.

Protesters were chanting "No to ACTA" (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) and carrying anti-ACTA signs.

[Kacper, Student, Warsaw]:
"We live in a democracy it's important to support the demonstrators that are here, to support those people who don't want ACTA to be signed."

An organisation calling itself 'AnonymousWiki' has been using social networking sites to threaten to bring down government websites over the weekend in protest of ACTA.

Since Sunday neither the Government's website or the Parliament's website, have been working properly.

The Polish Prime Minister says Poland will go ahead with signing a copyright treaty.

[Donald Tusk, Polish Prime Minister]:
"After the eventual ratification of this agreement by the parliament there will be a lot of time for consultation with society about eventual effects on our national economy. But this ratification needs to be signed by the President."

[Bartosz Tura, Protest Organizer]:
"... If the protests keep going and especially if young people show that we have to fight for the freedom of the internet, then in my opinion the parliamentarians will have to think about putting it into law."

The ACTA treaty is due to be signed by Poland and a host of other countries, including the US, Australia, Canada and the rest of the EU in Tokyo, Japan on Thursday January 26.
