Reported on Seven's 4.30 News (19/4/2007), Qantas is to trial passenger use of mobile phones while at cruising altitude.
Mobile phone use has been banned because it is said that the signals interfere with aircraft navigation systems (the buzzing noise that goes through your speakers when a mobile phone transmits makes this understandable). Note in the story that if pilots find they are having problems, they can block the signals.
Some believe the real reason for the ban on inflight mobile phone use is because they are worried that mobile phone towers over a wider area (100 to 200km radius of the plane) would be interfered with.
