Loyal Rue presenting the central concept of his 2006 book, "Religion Is Not About God," at the Beyond Belief Conference held in California in 2006. Rue is a philosopher and natural historian of cultures, and he is one of the leaders of both the scholarly endeavor to understand the evolutionary roots and functions of religion and the cultural movement to bring a mainstream understanding of "big history" (aka, the "epic of evolution") into prominence as a secular, religious, and moral resource.

  • Religion generates much evil as well. In recieving wisdom and truth from reading religious writtings and not being told what to know or understand God works through you. You are blessed. Thank you for doing what you do. You are God's child.

  • Religion hinders your closeness with God, it limits your relationship based on set beliefs. To understand the bible you must read it in spirit and truth. It is personal. If everyone put the life source first (God) based on our spiritual understanding with truth we would socially live very right. There would be no power struggles. We would ultimately be working towards completing within ourselves and each other God's Will. It is beautiful.

  • Interesting. I should read his book.

  • I like this! While I agree with the premise that Facts and Values are distinct, I lean toward Sam Harris' view that we will eventually narrow the distance between the two as neuroscience improves our understanding. If we can quantify values, even in a slightly better way than we do now it cannot help but bring the two sides of this most contentious debate toward mutual understanding. This has a good chance of taming, if not de-clawing the beast of Revelations.
