The name Bongo Flava comes from the Swahili word for brains (connoting smarts or intelligence), which is ubongo. Bongo is the slang nickname for Dar es Salaam, the largest city in Tanzania, and the former capital. The streets of Dar es Salaam is where Tanzanian hip-hop and R&B was born, thus the name of the genre literally translates to the flava from Dar es Salaam.
