I spent some time today along Union Pacific's ex-C&NW Geneva Sub today, in Lombard and Glen Ellyn, Illinois, west of Chicago, from early this afternoon until after sunset into the evening. The day started with seeing a detoured Amtrak California Zephyr, and though I wasn't fast enough to run to the tracks and get it on camera, the last train of the night happened to be the eastbound #6- with a surprise on the point! Train descriptions following:

Location 1: Lombard:
Train 1:
AC4400CW #6636 and SD90/43MACs #8254 and 8038, the latter looking pretty fresh in the "We Will Deliver" scheme, lead an ethanol train east.

Train 2:
SD70M #4725 and Dash-9 #9595 bring a manifest eastward. The cut in the background is where the Chicago Great Western Railway used to cross over the C&NW line here on a bridge. Remnants of the abutments still remain.

Train 3:
F40PH #151, the "Leo J. Cusik", pushes 9 bilevels inbound toward Chicago, including three ex-C&NW Pullmans- a lot for one train, especially on the weekend.

Train 4:
F40PH #153, the "City of Palatine", brings 5 cars west on an outbound run.

Train 5:
ES44AC #5508 and SD70ACe #8692 lead a fairly short manifest toward Proviso Yard to the east.

Train 6:
Later, on the boundary of Glen Ellyn and Lombard, a manifest waits on the center main, which here serves as a train holding point for Proviso. UP SD70M #5201 and ex-SP AC4400CW #6327 are the power.

Location 2: Glen Ellyn
Train 7:
A 5-car inbound Metra train is pushed by by F40PH #153, toward the city. This is the same set of equipment as train 4, seen earlier.

Train 8:
UP ES44AC #7683, SD70M #5076, and SD70ACe #8405 bring an intermodal train east on an advance approach.

Train 9:
F40PH #157 has 6 cars in tow on its way west to Elburn.

Train 10:
A total of four UP SD70Ms speed through the superelevation at Glen Ellyn on their way east to either Global II (Proviso) or Global I in Chicago.

Train 11:
Two ES44ACs and two SD70Ms, with another GEVO as a mid-train unit, speed another eastbound stack train through Glen Ellyn.

Train 12:
Shiny new SD70ACe #8700 leads two SD70Ms with another intermodal, this one westbound, on Track 1. An ES44AC pushes in DPU mode on the rear.

Train 13:
What a great way to finish off the night!! It's a bit hard to see, but here is Amtrak's train #6, the eastbound California Zephyr, being detoured non-stop from Omaha to Chicago. A UP AC4400CW leads the train, followed by not one, but TWO of Amtrak's heritage P42DCs; #66, the Phase II unit, and #184, the Phase IV unit!
