Jimmie Lunceford was a pioneer of American Music & American Music Education. Without any financial support he basically started the first high school orchestra (Manassas High School)in Memphis City Schools history and arguably the first jazz studies education program in America if not the world. He took nine of his most talented young students from his high school orchestra and close gifted buddies from Fisk University to create according to many in the know the greatest swing band in jazz swing history. However, his legacy has lain forgotten in the grave for 60 years and counting ever since he was 'poisoned' read 'murdered' by a racist white restaurant owner in 1947. Please join Tha Artivist as he recreates or rather resurrects the legacy of this forgotten Giant with rare and insightful interviews from the people and experts who knew and know him best. Interviewees include the following: Lunceford Orchestra Alum & Jazz Great Gerald Wilson; Lunceford Biographer Eddy Determeyer; the great Memphis educator, Manassas High Alum (Class of 1932) and former last living Lunceford student Katheryn Perry Thomas; Memphis Music Legend Emerson Able; Memphis music historian Preston Lauterbach.
